The Ohio State University is one of the nation’s leading public research institutions, and continually stimulates new discoveries on the frontier of research and innovation.

Over the years, the Department of Aviation has been instrumental in various aviation research initiatives such as engine design, pilot training and performance, and glass cockpit design. With such tools at its disposal as The Ohio State University Airport and its Flight Education program, the Department continues to be on the cutting edge of aviation research and development. These resources further allow the Aviation Department and the University to pursue interdisciplinary research opportunities.

Research activities currently taking place within the Department or at the Airport are shown in the following table:

Aviation Research

Understanding Airspace, Objects, and their effects on Airports
•Sponsor: National Academies Transportation Research Board
FAA Airport Cooperative Research Program

•Description: To study the interaction of urban development in the vicinity of
Airports with the need to preserve navigable airspace. Project will address
federal regulatory policies and local case examples of interest to the wider
industry. KOSU is a key case analysis.

•Grant: $200,000

FAA Safety Management System (SMS) Round 2 Pilot Study
•Sponsor: Federal Aviation Administration, Office of Airport Safety

•Description: To establish requirements for Safety Management Systems at
airports based on International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidance,
over and above FAA certification standards. KOSU selected by FAA for its current
level of operations as an active General Aviation facility and for its
association with The Ohio State University College of Engineering.

•Grant: $100,000
