OSU Flight Team Wins 2012 Region III Competition

The OSU Flight Team won the 2012 Region III SAFECON, hosted by Kent State University this past week.  The team of eleven aviation majors dominated the Ground Events Championship and placed second in the Flying Events Championships.  Ohio State took overall first place, followed by Kent State University, Western Michigan University, Ohio University and University of Cincinnati.

For the second year in a row, Team Captain Anthony Pentz won the Overall Top Pilot Award, a feat that has never been accomplished by anyone in the region since records show from the early 1980′s.  Fellow Team Captain Bernie Eddy placed third Overall Top Pilot and Alex Mulac placed 4th.

The Buckeyes represented themselves in typical fashion of cordial, friendly and full of fun during the weeklong competition in Stow, Ohio.  The weather favored flying most of the week and on the landing event day with a nice crosswind the Buckeye pilots proved once again why their reputation for excellence in training rose well above the other schools competing.

As mentioned the Ground Events were dominated by Team OSU.  The Preflight Event team placed first, second and third lead by Alex Mulac.  The Aircraft Recon team overpowered the competition with Anthony Pentz placing first with 177/180 (missed one aircraft slide) followed by Joshua Fisher taking second place with 175 pts.  The SCAN team placed all five team members in the top eight, the Ground Simulator Event was won by Bernie Eddy and Anthony Pentz taking third place.  Computer Accuracy (E6B) put three of the team members in the top ten.

The flight events were well represented by the Buckeyes.  Kent State took first through fourth in the Message Drop Event. However, Ohio State put three teams in the top ten without practicing for this event.  The flight team Cessna 150 Buckeye 50 continued its tradition taking first place in the Short Field Landing Event by Anthony Pentz.  The Navigation Team’s took fourth, fifth and sixth. Ohio State also placed third in the top ten of Power Off Landing event as well.

The OSU Flight will now advance to 2013 national NIFA SAFECON in May traveling to the Ohio State University Airport.  Please stop by the OSU Flight Education and Training Building at the OSU Airport to see the fine display of trophies and plaques.  Congratulations to the OSU Flight Team and Coaches!  Go Bucks!
