Gerhardt, Adam

Biography

Adam joined The OSU Center for Aviation Studies as a part-time Lecturer in 2022. He teaches the Aviation Accident Investigation course, which involves classroom instruction and labs at the OSU Airport Crash Lab. While at the crash lab, students have the opportunity to investigate real aircraft wreckage in accident simulations and apply what was learned in the classroom.

Adam currently holds the position of Senior Aviation Accident Investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) based in Columbus. He has been investigating aircraft accidents as the Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) for nearly 10 years. He has been the IIC and United States Accredited Representative for +450 domestic and international aviation accident investigations.

Prior to the NTSB, Adam worked for the FAA as a Human Factors Analyst. His career started in Flight Instruction after graduating from the University of North Dakota (UND) with a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Aviation. He spent a few years as a CFI/CFII/ MEI instructing with UND and also taught aviation curriculum abroad to civilian airline pilot candidates at the Civil Aeronautical University of China in Tianjin, China. 

Adam also has Part 121 airline experience, having flown for US Airways Express as a First Officer on the CRJ-200 based in Washington, DC (KDCA). He holds a Master's in Aeronautical Science & Human Factors from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
